Lanterne Rouge

Written on August 7, 2008

Kottke writes about the Lanterne Rouge, which is the unofficial award for last place in the Tour de France.

While it may not be the most coveted award in the sport, it nonetheless represents a significant achievement. Even to finish the race means that you have achieved more than 20 percent of all the other riders who drop out due to injury, fatigue or any of a number of other hurdles which abound in arguably the most grueling and punishing competition around.

All of which I guess is encouragement for not giving up. Even though you may come last, at least you were able to place at all.
